Biography
Parsons began working in photography in the 1980s, when he bought his first camera and enrolled in black and white technique courses at the International Center of Photography. While he has worked in 35mm format, he prefers using a 4x5 camera. When he adopted digital photography a decade or so ago the emphasis of most of his work shifted to color. His main interest is still life photography, much of it idea-based, though his work also includes other projects, some of which can be found on this site (see, for example, "Nocturnes" and "At Auschwitz: A Remembrance") He has also completed a series of candid pictures of people in art museums around the world and enjoys making 'found' photographs that emphasize the form and structure present in the chaos of daily life.
Parsons was born and grew up in the American South. He received a B. A. in physics from the University of Mississippi and a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University. He resides in New York City. He is a long-time member of Soho Photo Gallery and currently serves as its president. He has exhibited in a wide range of venues in New York City and around the country.
He is also a photography critic; his reviews of photography exhibitions can be found at the New York Photo Review (www.nyphotoreview.com).
